You’ll hear me say quit the gym. And what I mean by that isn’t stop lifting weights or stop running or stop working out or stop exercising or stop doing anything physical. What it means is stop relying on the facility, the gym, the commute. It could be a crutch for people who say, oh, well, the gym was closed or it’s too icy or I’m too busy or it’s too early or whatever, and I just can’t go to the gym.
So therefore today I’m doing nothing physical.
That’s not a good model for the rest of your life. I’m out here in the woods, it’s about 7:20 a.m. and I’m doing sprints uphill, I’m hiking, I’m walking, dropping and doing some push ups. Maybe I’ll to a hundred out here, maybe I’ll do 500. Just really depends on how I feel that day.
If you rely on a facility and the machines and then the lack of know how and then the feeling of like, Oh, I don’t really know how to do that, so I’m just not going to approach that machine. You end up just kind of doing the same thing over and over again and you don’t really see results.
So you drive to this place to waste your time, get changed in the locker room. You waste your time. You go out on the floor. Do you work out? You might do small talk with somebody, waste your time, and then you get to some exercise or some things that you’re familiar with and you do them. It’s not a waste of time, but you’re not optimizing your time.
So if you can tailor your workouts based on knowledge that you have to whatever your body needs that day and you have minimal equipment and you utilize the outdoors as your primary gym… then the gym is always open.
